Before you fly to China
Do these at home. Most eSIM problems in China come from skipping step one.
- Install at homeScan the QR code over Wi-Fi before you leave, so you are online the moment you land.
- Check your phone is unlockedA phone locked to your carrier won't accept another eSIM.
- Turn on roaming for the eSIM onlyLeave your home line on for calls and texts, with its data off.
- Save the network tipIf evenings get slow, pick another network by hand in your phone settings.
Questions people ask
What travellers ask about eSIMs in China.
How do I install an eSIM for China?
After you buy a plan, the provider sends you a QR code by email or in their app. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Mobile Service, then Add eSIM. On Android, open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs. Scan the code while you are still at home on Wi-Fi, then switch the eSIM on for mobile data when you land.
Will an eSIM work in China?
Yes, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier. The plans we list for China connect to local networks there. Coverage in cities is usually good; if you are heading somewhere remote, check which network the plan uses before you buy.
Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?
Most travel eSIMs let you share data with a laptop or a friend's phone through a hotspot. A few providers block or limit it, so read the plan details if you need it. Anything you use over the hotspot comes out of the same data allowance.
Will I get a phone number?
Most travel eSIMs are data only: you get mobile internet but no local number. You can still call and message through WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar apps. If you need a number, tick Phone number in the plan filters to see the plans that include one. Your home SIM can stay on for texts such as bank codes.
How we compare eSIMs
Prices come straight from each provider's own feed, converted to euros. The table sorts plans by price per GB unless you pick another order, and our picks come from those same prices. Providers can't pay to rank higher.
