Keeping WhatsApp and your number while abroad

You need

  • Your home SIM, kept in the phone
  • A travel eSIM for data
  • Two minutes before you fly

Your number is your account, not your connection

WhatsApp checks your number once, by SMS, when you set it up. After that it only needs internet. So the travel eSIM can carry the data while your home SIM keeps the number.

  • Home lineOn, with data roaming off. Keeps your number for SMS codes and normal calls.
  • Travel eSIMCarries all the data: WhatsApp, maps, everything else.
  • WhatsAppNothing to change. Same number, same chats, same groups.

Set it up in four taps

  1. 1

Install the travel eSIM at home

Follow our iPhone install guide, or the same steps under SIMs on Android.

  2. 2

    Leave your home line on

Do not remove the SIM or turn the line off. It is what keeps your number reachable.

  3. 3

Turn off data roaming on the home line

This is the switch that stops roaming charges.

  4. 4

Send mobile data over the eSIM

WhatsApp now runs over the travel plan. Open it: everything is where you left it.

Do this before you fly

  • Turn on two-step verification

A six-digit PIN protects your account if someone tries to register your number while you are away.

  • Back up your chats

If you lose your phone abroad, you can restore everything on a new one.

  • Do not reinstall WhatsApp abroad

A reinstall asks for a new SMS code to your home number. It arrives only if your home line is on and reachable.
